Hikal Cup, an exceptional three-day series of tennis tournament for corporates held every year is hosted by Hikal in association with Bombay Gymkhana at the Bombay Gymkhana Tennis courts. Over the years Hikal Cup has gained a lot of popularity amongst the tennis aficionados and corporate houses thereby witnessing increased participation every year.
In the recently held 8th Hikal Cup Corporate Tennis Tournament that was scheduled, from 6th - 8th March, 2009, a record 40 teams representing the country’s leading corporate houses took part in the tournament. Hikal Cup received an overwhelming response with multiple entries from notable corporate houses such as Reliance Industries (2008 winners), Yogeshwar International (2008 runners up), Bharat Petroleum, HSBC, Standard Chartered, Bank of America, Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Power amongst others.
The tournament was played on knock-out basis with each team playing two singles and one doubles match. The winner’s title for the 8th Hikal Cup Corporate Invitation Tennis Tournament went to Indian Navy who defeated Shivram Entreprises by 2-0. While A. Pednekar from Indian Navy beat Shivram’s Amrish Arora in the opening singles, he later paired with Narendra to prevail over Arora and Karan in the doubles to seal the match.
Mrs. & Mr. Jai Hiremath, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Hikal presented the trophies to the winners and the runners up in a glittering awards function on the last day of the tournament followed by cocktails and dinner. For the first time, Hikal introduced special trophies in recognition of the best player and the upcoming player of the tournament. The trophy for the best player of the tournament went to Narendra from Indian Navy and the upcoming player of the tournament went to Shantanu Engineer from Grand Hotel.
